We had a wonderful week of learning together!

In math we are reviewing dynamic addition and subtraction until the end of the year, as well as word problems, but we're also learning about 2D and 3D shapes.

In literacy, we read the classic story Caps for Sale and practiced retelling the story to build our comprehension skills. Students worked on remembering important details and putting events in order. Ask your child to tell you all about it! 

In spelling, we focused on tricky homophones (we’re, wear, were, where) and learned how to add -er and -est to compare words. We had fun with active games like arm wrestling and crab walks to help us understand these concepts! We used headbands to dictate sentences to our friends.

Addison was the strongest armwrestler!

With the rainy start to the week, we connected our learning to our watershed and where our water comes from. We talked about rising rivers and water safety, including why it is important to stay away from riverbanks. We also explored erosion through an experiment and discovered that “trees” help hold soil in place—roots act like straws (to drink water) and like hands (to hold soil).

We sprayed this 'mountain' with blue coloured water so that we could swee where the natural mountain lakes would form. It was exciting to see streams and rivers form, too. 

We used magnifying glasses to observe birch trees and created art showing foreground, midground, and background.

In our nature study, we looked closely at different kinds of seeds and learned how they travel. We also explored the birch tree, watched videos, and learned the song Land of the Silver Birch. Some students chose to perform it at the Volunteer Tea!

We also continued building our “Getting to Green Zone” toolboxes, sharing strategies to help us stay calm, focused, and ready to learn.
