Happy Friday Everyone!
This week we read Ablaze With Colour - the story of Alma Thomas (an art teacher who didn't start her own art career "seriously" until she was in her 70s!) That's a fun fact, but the real focus of this book was on treating people with respect regardless of their skin colour. After all, we all want the same things - a happy, healthy family, love and laughter, fun celebrations and good snacks!!
Students had the optioin to create their Alma Inspired artwork with paper pieces (we chopped all the paper on Thursday) or with guache paint. They also chose the size and style of paper that they wanted.
We brought in some lunch tables to give ourselves more elbow room.

I love how each art piece was unique but also similar. Just like us!
Math card games are a great way to practice basic facts.

Almost all of our plants have gone home now. Students either had a nasturtium, bean or radish plant.
We learned that there are three ways to harvest plants (manually, with tools, or with machines). The children compared and contrasted two plants, and illustrated the benefits and importance of plants.
Children responded to a Would You Rather prompt on Tuesday.
We learned about our provincial flower - the wild rose. After doing a guided drawing, the children roamed around the room collecting facts (posted throughout) for their infographic.
We started each morning (soft entry) with creative drawing prompts.
Sometimes you just need to read a good book.
Our adventure stories have (mostly) been sent home. We created the plot together and tried our best to 'Show Not Tell' what our characters were feeling and doing. We had to research bear safety, what to do if you come across a bear when hiking in the woods. Exciting stuff!
We practiced adding the 'ly' and 'y' suffix this week. When students play "Headbands" they are reading a sentence to their partner (dictating) and vice versa. They try to get through as many sentences as they can before the time is up!

More shape art from last week.
It was such a pleasure to attend the dress rehearsal for the Grade 4 Farewell Assemby. The students were a fantastic audience.
More plant learning...
