Grade 2 Update

Please welcome Shirin, our new Grade 2 student.

As we get closer to summer, a reminder that library books and home reading books in red folders need to come back to school. Thank you. We encourage families to continue reading over the summer by visiting the Calgary Public Library.

Grade 3 is often considered the final year for direct reading instruction, so continuing to practice over the summer is very helpful.

Please let me know if your child will be leaving early for summer holidays.

In Science, we have been learning about deciduous and coniferous trees by exploring the trees in our schoolyard. We looked at a tree cookie and counted its rings to learn about age and time. Our sample was 32 years old. We also learned about the parts of a woody stem and how tree rings show the passage of time.

In Math, students explored transformations including turns, slides, and flips using their initials. They created colourful shape art with patterns and built 3D shape monsters. Students described edges, vertices, faces, and even added fun personalities. There were many imaginative details, including lots of allergies among the shape monsters! We also built 3D shapes using toothpicks and mini marshmallows. We continue to practice addition and subtraction with regrouping, skip counting forwards and backwards by 5, 10, 25 and 100, and applying our learning to word problems.

In Phonics and Writing, we practiced the doubling rule using 1 -1 -1. Students wrote in journals, completed a Roll a Dragon activity with a partner or small group, and wrote stories using the Somebody Wanted But So Then structure with a word bank.

We also enjoyed playing outside with our Grade 3 buddies and practiced coming in through the Grade 3 doors as we prepare for next year.

Thank you for your continued support, have a great weekend!
