April 17th
In Math, last week we reviewed addition and subtraction basic facts, subtraction strategies such as counting up and using inverse operations, and the adding to 9 trick. We also revisited number sense, place value limits, and how to determine if regrouping is needed. Students practised with base ten blocks and played Race to 100. This week, students are learning how to add two-digit numbers using base ten blocks and regrouping. They are consistently reminded that we always start with the units, nine is the limit of every category, and ten or more means we exchange and "move next door".
In UFLI, students reviewed vowel teams, two letters that make one vowel sound. Next week, Lesson 93 will introduce the vowel teams au, aw, and augh, all representing the /aw/ sound, with practice in reading, spelling, and using these patterns in connected text.
Our chick egg project continues to be very exciting. Two eggs were candled, and students could see an eye developing. One egg is unusually large, and students are wondering if it might be a duck egg. Students made predictions about how many eggs will hatch and which will hatch first, and we graphed our predictions together.
In Science, students rotated through living systems centres focused on oviparous animals, plant and animal life cycles, animal sounds using onomatopoeia, and solving mysteries by identifying animal tracks.
In Art, students are studying Keith Haring and exploring how artists show movement. We also read the book Window by Jeannie Baker, and discussed perspective and change. Here is a link to a video of the book if your child is interested in watching it again.
Coming up, we will be going for our Earth Day walk on Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. Please see the separate email for details. We are also preparing for the spring concert on Thursday. Doors open at 5:00 p.m., students go directly to classrooms, and the show begins at 5:30 p.m.
This week is also our student teacher Chloe Parker’s final week. Her last day is Thursday, and sadly, she is unable to attend the concert due to a previous commitment. (She is very excited to see the dress rehearsal!) It has been an absolute pleasure having Ms. Parker in our classroom - we will miss her!
Thank you for your continued support in making Grade 2 a positive and focused place for learning. Have a great weekend!
Sarah

If your family is experiencing challenges with providing food for your children you can find help at Brown Bagging Calgary.
