March 13th
Grade 2 Weekly Update
What a fun and full week we’ve had in Grade 2!
No School Next Friday
Parent-teacher conferences will take place. Please book a time to come celebrate your child’s growth. Every child has strengths, and every child has challenges - both are completely normal! We truly are a team, and it really does take a village. There's also the Book Fair on Thursday night and Friday. Many great books and a great fundraiser for our school library!
During Parent-Teacher Conferences on Thursday, March 19 and Friday, March 20, we invite families to place a colourful push pin on our world map located in our Learning Commons to show where their family comes from. Together, we’ll create a vibrant picture celebrating the diverse backgrounds that make up our school community!
Social Studies
We explored needs and wants and learned about natural resources—a great lead-in to next week’s new topic: levels of government. (New curriculum = new learning for students and teachers!)
We also squeezed in lots of writing and illustrating tied to our social studies work. Busy brains, busy pencils!
Math:
This week was all about review and confidence building. We revisited:
- Fractions
- Basic facts
- Money
- Skip counting
- Number sense and place value
The kids did an EstiMystery, too! An EstiMystery is a fun puzzle where students use clues to estimate the number of objects in a jar—in this case, woven balls. They absolutely loved it and showed wonderful reasoning and math talk.
Literacy
Our phonics focus was on vowel teams that make the long “O” sound. We practiced with:
- Sound mapping
- Scrambled sentences
- Cloze activities
- Roll & Read
- Direct instruction and dictation
Read-Aloud
We started a new class novel: The Littles, inspired by the book Mouse in the Library that Emmi J shared with us last week. The class is hooked!
Safety Drill
We had a lockdown on Thursday, and the children did wonderfully. Sitting still and silent for 20 minutes is no small feat - even many grown-ups couldn’t do it! They made us proud.
Next Week in Grade 2
Special Visit! Reese’s mom is coming to teach us about what her work as a firefighter is like. She’ll show us her gear and answer questions. We’re so lucky to have real-life experts visit our classroom!
Tuesday: St. Patrick’s Day!
We’ll celebrate with art, limericks, reading, writing, and (sadly!) no leprechaun traps this year. Those clever Grade 1 leprechaun visitors know our Grade 2s are far too smart—they remember what happened last time and aren’t taking any chances!Language Arts Focus:
- Adjectives
- Narrative writing
- Vowel team review

If your family is experiencing challenges with providing food for your children you can find help at Brown Bagging Calgary.
Complete this form for support and they can deliver lunches to McKenzie Towne School for your children. https://go.bb4ck.org/l/858913/2024-01-15/38fdbw You can also find out more information on their website https://bb4ck.org/
