Grade 2 Weekly Update

We had a busy and exciting week in Grade 2.

Literacy
We practiced sound mapping with ai/ay words and created a word web for The Mitten. After reading Deep in the Forest, students used H-graphs (similar to Venn diagrams) to compare the two stories and talk about how they are alike and different.
We also practiced reading books that included our weekly spelling rule. Students read with me, with partners, and independently.

Math

We continued exploring fractions as equal parts of a whole and sorted pictures into what is and is not a fraction.
We also continued working on fact families, especially subtraction. Many children find subtraction challenging, so please practice basic math facts at home. These skills will become more difficult as we move forward.

Science
Students enjoyed several hands-on activities. We experimented with four jars filled with different amounts of water and learned that water levels change the pitch of the sound. This is a great experiment to try at home.
Students rotated through stations to decide whether materials were transparent, translucent, or opaque.
Using a strong flashlight and a model tree, we explored how shadows work and how they change as the sun moves through the sky.

Health

This week we discussed the importance of making healthy choices. We talked about staying active, eating fruits and vegetables, choosing healthy snacks, and limiting treats. We also discussed limiting screen time so students can sleep well, make memories, explore the world, use their imagination, and be creative. We encouraged everyone to read, play, imagine, and move their bodies.

Other Highlights

It was a blue week, so we had indoor recess twice a day. We stayed active with daily Danny Go movement breaks and watched some Olympic events together. Students also had time to explore art materials and created chains, springs, and more. To celebrate Lunar New Year, we made colourful dragons.

Have a great weekend everyone!
