November 7th

This week, students began writing their Fortunately stories inspired by Fortunately by Remy Charlip. They’ve been practicing writing complete sentences and using their editing skills to improve their work. Next week, we’ll finish illustrations and covers for our stories.
In math, we explored numbers up to 1000 and practiced identifying place value in numbers like 1,098. Students played Fast Doubles (knockout game) and began learning how to read and locate numbers on a number line. Try asking your child, “On a number line from 185 to 200, where would 195 go?”
Our Buddy Reading Program is off to a great start! Students take turns being the coach or the reader, with roles changing each week. Ask your child to model some of the reading strategies from our classroom poster.
We also discussed the meaning of Remembrance Day and the significance of wearing a poppy. We read A Poppy Is to Remember and wrote poems about peace. (Sorry for the quality of the photos, the sun was shining through the window - which I can't complain about!)
In Social Studies, we started our new unit, Time and Place. Ask your child what city, province, and country they live in, and practice giving directions using relative location (e.g., “The park is BEHIND the school, Your Halloween candy is IN my closet, ON TOP of the shelf."
In Health, our focus was on dental health and making healthy lunch choices. We discussed how candy is a treat and should be the smallest part of our daily food intake. Students also practiced using “I Statements” to express their feelings respectfully — for example:
“When you chase me, I feel frustrated because I want to play with my friends. Please stop.”
Our goal is to identify feelings and use our words to solve problems respectfully and peacefully.
Next week’s spelling pattern: i_e words (see Roll & Read sheet)
Heart words: or, for, there, where
Have a wonderful weekend!
