November 20th
Métis Week in Grade 2 was a wonderful celebration of learning, culture, and hands-on experiences.
Each day, we explored a different aspect of Métis culture through books, videos, discussions, and creative activities. A huge thank you to Joellen (Emmi Q.'s mom), who volunteered on Thursday morning. With incredible energy and kindness, she made bannock four times with four groups of children. Wow! The students loved tasting the bannock plain, with butter, and with delicious saskatoon berry jam.
We also responded to the book "What’s in a Bead". This story helped us learn about respect and the meaning carried in beadwork.
Earlier in the week, we researched Métis clothing, dance, and the Métis flag. We also practiced our editing skills by working through fix-ups together on the whiteboard.
On Friday, we learned how to create a bubble graphic organizer to sort and organize the facts we gathered throughout the week. Students worked hard to stretch their sentences and combine more than one idea into every sentence. (Random examples are shown below).
We learned how to do Métis dot art, inspired by traditional Métis beadwork and the book, Métis Like Me.
(These are still on the drying rack - I'll post photos next week). Ask your child to explain the spirit bead to you. (It is one bead that is intentionally different from the rest to remind us that everyone makes mistakes, and that is what makes us human.)BANNOCK RECIPE
Parks Canada Heritage Recipe
This recipe has been adapted from a traditional Métis recipe.
Ingredients
3 cups of all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons of baking powder
3 tablespoons of vegetable oil
1 cup of cold water
Directions:
Put the flour, baking powder and oil into a bowl and stir until mixed well.
Add the cold water and knead well (about ten times) on a lightly floured surface.
Roll into a ball and cover for 10 minutes.
Press ball onto a hot griddle, oven or long-handled cast-iron fry pan over an open fire.
Cook for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
Score into slices while still warm and serve with your favourite jam or wild berries.
Enjoy!
