November 20th

This week we learned... a lot!

Métis Week in Grade 2 was a wonderful celebration of learning, culture, and hands-on experiences.

Each day, we explored a different aspect of Métis culture through books, videos, discussions, and creative activities. A huge thank you to Joellen (Emmi Q.'s mom), who volunteered on Thursday morning. With incredible energy and kindness, she made bannock four times with four groups of children. Wow! The students loved tasting the bannock plain, with butter, and with delicious saskatoon berry jam.

We also responded to the book "What’s in a Bead". This story helped us learn about respect and the meaning carried in beadwork.

Earlier in the week, we researched Métis clothing, dance, and the Métis flag. We also practiced our editing skills by working through fix-ups together on the whiteboard.

"Metis speed" is our favourite jigging speed.

On Friday, we learned how to create a bubble graphic organizer to sort and organize the facts we gathered throughout the week. Students worked hard to stretch their sentences and combine more than one idea into every sentence. (Random examples are shown below).

We learned how to do Métis dot art, inspired by traditional Métis beadwork and the book, Métis Like Me.

(These are still on the drying rack - I'll post photos next week). Ask your child to explain the spirit bead to you. (It is one bead that is intentionally different from the rest to remind us that everyone makes mistakes, and that is what makes us human.)

Friday's Writing: Organizing our research helps us
to write in our own voice.

In Social Studies, we sanded wooden blocks before transforming them into buildings for our town. Next week, we will put our town together and practice using cardinal directions.
On Fridays the children can unroll their number rolls and measure them in the hallway. Clara's roll was four and half Clara's long! We are practicing counting in standard form, place value, and reading numbers.

Have a great weekend everyone!
