This Week in Grade 2

Math
  • We continued working with patterns. Students are now moving beyond extending patterns and are creating their own repeating patterns that change in attributes. For example:

    • A repeating pattern that changes in shape and size

    • A repeating pattern that changes in colour and direction

  • Once we created simple AB or AAB patterns, we substituted different attributes for the A and B.

  • We also practiced:

    • Around the World (fast doubles)Addition facts

    • Number strips (counting and reviewing place value)

    • Reading and writing numbers into the hundreds

In Science we explored the properties of materials using hands-on bins. Students tested whether objects are:

  • Absorbent or waterproof

  • Reflective or non-reflective

  • Malleable or brittle

  • Translucent or opaque

  • We also measured the length and weight of various materials.

Writing & Penmanship

  • In writing, we worked on editing, using pronouns, and reviewing the subject and predicate in sentences.

  • For penmanship, we are getting serious about making sure our letters are the correct size. An uppercase letter in the middle of a word? No thank you!

All week we are dancing with Three Left Feet! The students are preparing for a performance next Thursday afternoon from 12:45-1:30 - families are welcome to attend.

Spelling: Spelling tests are every Friday. Today's test is in your child's backpack or lunch bag.

From Bennet, Emmi, Narnia and Penny:

Bennett: We did some sunflower art and learned how the lifecycle of sunflowers are. Ms. Thomson's friend had little sunflowers in her garden and gave them to us and we drew sunflowers like them.

Emmi: The sunflowers  - we learned how we can draw them, make new stuff about them, and they're really awesome because I didn't know they can come in all kinds of shapes and colours!

Penny: We danced and we practiced and it was super fun!

Narnia: On Monday we have to bring the red reading folder back with our books.

Penny: Also on Monday we get to bring and wear jerseys to school. Cheer jerseys, hockey jerseys or any kind of jerseys. (It was actually today but we all forgot so we are going to do it on Monday with Ms. Pynn's class because they mostly forgot, too.)

Bennet: Ms. Thomson gave us little math books to work on and it goes up to 20! You do numbers and equations and all sorts of stuff.

Emmi: And also we got to learn how to share the chalk pastels and practice sharing.

Bennett: We are working on everyone playing together at the park and everyone being kind to each other.

Narnia: The best part of the week was the weaving. I finished mine!

Emmi: And Narnia got braces!!

From last week:

Personalizing our Visual Journals:
We are collecting items to personalize the cover of our visual journals with all of the things we love! To help with this,
Please send in items such as stickers, magazine cut-outs, printed pictures of favourite things (superheroes, characters, hobbies, etc.), family photos, the first letter of your child’s name, or pictures of pets/favorite animals.
All items will need to be flat so that the covers can be taped or laminated and stored easily. Please send these items to school in a Ziploc bag labeled with your child’s name. All items should be brought in by Thursday, September 25th. These personal touches will help make each student’s journal meaningful and unique. Thank you for supporting this creative project!
